But before he can quite relax an unusual assignment comes his way: A wealthy, aristocratic client is asking — insisting even — that he help her inventory the private library she and her husband have inherited. The couple is looking for something, of course: a medieval manuscript, a codex. An international bestseller, Codex has been published in 13 countries in 11 languages. You can download it here. This is one of those deeply nuanced tales in which small things take on great significance and readers are rewarded for paying close attention to detail. Intelligent, dramatic, great characters, fantastic plot, and like all the best thrillers, believable. A fabulous double-helix of a novel. Codex is also a fascinating and informative exploration into some ofhte most exclusive and unusual and highly inaccessible realms of society. If Codex is an example of the kidn of hybrid literary things to come, book lovers of all types are better off. Worlds collide like particles in a cyclotron, when Lev Grossman turns up the heat in this fast-paced, cerebral thriller — all pointing toward a quest for a rare, million-dollar book: the Codex. A thought-provoking and compulsively readable novel. Codex is a rare treat for readers and bibliophiles.

I felt the need to write a review to counter the negative reviews I was seeing. This is not a book for everyone. I think many people read it after the Magicians Trilogy expecting it to be like them or maybe people used to the rather poor writing quality of the Dan Brown books.

This is more for people who like his meandering style and understand the joy of researching history. If your looking for magic lands or conspiracy mystery thrillers then you probably won't like this.

But for me his character development is quite enjoyable and he reminds me in some of Philip Dick in that the heroes and heroines are flawed human beings like you and me just getting lost in a quixotic quest simply for the joy and intrigue of it all. Ordinary people who don't always save the day. If you're a certain type of reader I think you will love this book. Just left of center , not avant anything. More mainstream readers may want to think twice. Paperback Verified download.

Codex: A Novel | Lev Grossman

I enjoyed the Magicians Trilogy enormously and was looking to try some more Grossman and this seemed to be potentially interesting. What this felt like, more than anything, was a talented writer learning the craft. The pacing is pretty good and the initial set-up is interesting. There are more than a few intriguing mysteries that keep you turning the pages, in particular how MOMUS will tie into the narrative and the final version of the lost text. For the first pages I was definitely curious about where it was all going.

But oddly none of the characters in the story developed in meaningful or interesting ways and pretty much everyone but the protagonist Edward never becomes a fully three-dimensional character.

However what really pushes this down to 2 stars is the ending. It not only doesn't make much sense but it fails miserably in tying together the mysteries of the book it promised.

It was as frustrating an ending as I have read in any book in a long while. There IS a good book in this raw material. A part of me almost wishes Grossman will come back to it, knowing what he knows now, and try again.

I'm pretty picky when it comes to books. So is Lev Grossman. After all, he gets paid to criticize the writing of others. When told to put his money where his mouth was, he did.

And it was dreadful. I am of course referring to "Warp", his first novel. In that novel, a bunch of kids just out of college go to work, and then hang out drinking and watching Star Trek while trying to figure out what to do with themselves and how to grow up. In his later series, "The Magicians", a bunch of kids graduate from Junior Magic College, don't get jobs, go to parties, hang out drinking and being terrible people while trying to figure out what to do with themselves and how to grow up.

In THIS book, a young man graduates finance college, works as an investment banker, and tries to Enter major plot twist Actually it's a compelling thriller, with books and video games and minor British royalty but it somehow manages to not be boring. Lots of people hated the ending but I thought it was realistic.

Overall this is a very solid sophomore entry by Grossman. I could carry on about the themes and whatnot, but frankly I'd rather folks read it for themselves and draw their own conclusions.

Now, a generation later, the Duchess wants the codex found. The Duke wants it permanently lost. And a scholar of medieval literature says it never existed in the first place.

The young banker, about to be transferred to the London office of his firm from New York, is dropped into the middle.

Grossman has written. Codex is a novel that takes the reader on a meandering journey of bibliophilia.

Lev Grossman lays out a Grail Quest for the main character that takes him through the high-powered financial world of the Manhattan elite, the dusty shelves of exclusive libraries, and the engrossing world-within-a-world of the technophile. Fans of Grossman's Magicians Trilogy should not look to Codex expecting fantasy adventure, as this novel is steeped much more firmly in reality, and is languidly paced. Overall a very satisfying read, although with a conclusion that leaves the reader with unanswered questions and a thirst for a sequel.
