The iconographic depictions of the Ptolemaic monarchy, both portraits and allegorical representations of the kings and queens, were at times purely Egyptian and at times purely Greek, but they also often fused together features of both cultures. Many of these latter representations were meant to be interpreted by each segment of the population according to their cultural background, providing an iconographic anchoring that could apply both to Greeks and to Egyptians. For this essay, I will focus on the depiction of head ornaments in Ptolemaic iconographic representations which could be in effect understood by both Greek and Egyptian populations, but I will argue that, although at first it could seem a move to create an equal standing between Greeks and Egyptians, these images were meant to appeal to a greater extent to the Greek population and, at times, to symbolise the Greek dominion over Egypt. During the first part of the essay I will briefly explain some aspects the Ptolemaic program of cultural symbiosis and the importance of head ornaments in both the Greek and Egyptian worlds, whilst for the second part, I will focus on certain images which support my argument. Finally, I shall show how the Ptolemaic iconography, through a priori minute details such as crowns and diadems, was directed towards the Greek population and tried to convey the idea of the domination of Greek culture over Egyptian and the legitimisation of the Ptolemaic dynasty. The Ptolemaic dynasty, though reigning in Egypt, was of Macedonian origin, which brought a great degree of Hellenisation to the country in many areas of royal intervention, amongst them art and iconography. The Ptolemaic monarchs still produced the traditional Egyptian-style depictions of pharaohs1, keeping in line with Egyptian artistic standards, but also began an iconographic program based on Greek models.
