Compare a metric to the rest of the industry. Determining the root cause is important, because having to reframe it later could fundamentally shift your hypothesis and the subsequent issue tree or framework you use to test it. I draw this framework as four distinct boxes, but you could quite easily redraw it as an issue tree with four branches: But by now, you know this is a big mistake.
You need to let your hypothesis guide your decision about which of the questions in the diagram—and others not in the diagram—are relevant in testing the hypothesis. The questions in the diagram are what I call high-probability questions. When answered, these questions give you a very high probability of discovering some insight about the case—enough insight to prompt you to refine your hypothesis. If even one word is off, rerecord the whole thing. Candidates who do this over and over and over again ultimately master this communication skill.
Thus, one commonly used issue tree deconstructs profits into component parts, enabling you to analyze each component to identify the root, or underlying, cause of the profitability problem.
