The drama of The Godfather is an epic; it is an epic because it deals with the quintessential themes that all epics deal with: family, love, and time. It is a drama that wrestles with the complexities of the human heart, the human condition, and the fallenness of man. As such, it captures the odyssey of the human heart poignantly. I shall return to this theme later. Additionally, the film is a deeply traditional one—for this one need only look at the themes it concerns itself with: family, love, and loyalty. What causes the story to advance is the breach of the code of family loyalty. Loyalty to family is everything and there are well- established boundaries that are not meant to be crossed; when those boundaries are crossed there are consequences to pay. Indeed, the Corleone family is classical to the core. Vito Corleone is the undisputed pater familias and treated as God—for the head of the family is the source of affection and stability in the otherwise cold and chaotic civitas terrena that the Corleones find themselves in. Imitatio Dei is replaced by imitatio pater. It is the highest aspiration that a Corleone can have. What did Papa think deep in his heart? It establishes the Corleone family and the values that they operate by. The revenge sought against Sollozzo and McClusky by contingent relationship is for the attempted assassination of the patriarch of the family. Sollozzo thought that if he could eliminate Vito Corleone from the picture and intimidate Sonny into control through Tom Hagan he could get what he needed from the Corleone family to begin a successful drug trade in New York City.

Focus on finding solutions and fast tracks to success. Don't clutter your brain with vendettas. This remained true even after Sonny was killed. The Don knew that an all-out war amongst the Five Families of New York would only drain his resources and destroy the Family business.

You must objectively look at the insults that come your way and realize the only reason the words make you angry is because of your interpretation of these events. You can choose to waste your energy and time on anger or revenge, or you can forgive, learn your lessons, and move on to what matters.

Rule 5 - The Godfather created a Strategic Vision. Don Vito Corleone did his homework. Puzo called The Godfather a 'strategic genius. The Godfather had a "vision of pain staking detail" and "He planned for the future of his empire with foresight and statesmanlike intelligence. If you've read my book, The Perfect Day Formula, you know I agree with the great Don about the power of creating a Vision for your life. Take the time to sit down and think big for your future.

Set aside a full morning to create the grand plan and a crystal clear vision for your life. Be a strategic genius and create your empire with foresight and intelligence.

Like The Godfather, you must leave nothing to chance. Rule 6 - The Godfather attacked problems head on and did not procrastinate. Corleone is a man who insists on hearing bad news at once. Most people run from problems, difficult decisions, and crucial conversations, but the Don knew he must attack them head on.

Problems, when avoided, only get worse. Identify the biggest obstacles in your life and take action on fixing them today before they grow bigger and begin to steal more of your time and energy.

Rule 7 - The Godfather kept his cards close to his chest. He did not show emotion, he did not vent anger, he simply observed the situation, identified the problem, and began to think in a rational way about how he could solve the tricky puzzle at hand.

He also protected himself, and his time. He stayed out of the limelight and avoided attention on the Family business.

This is difficult to do in this day and age of social media. In fact, many businesses are built upon leveraging the limelight.

But if you do this, do so strategically. Dictate to the world how you will be seen and what you will be known for. Protect your time and don't let the competition know your next move.

Rule 8 - The Godfather kept Family first. Everything you've learned from The Perfect Day Formula, every success tool and secret, is designed to put more structure in your day so that you have more freedom for your family. It is in this approach to life that The Godfather and I share the same values. The Don had "Infinite sympathy and understanding for his family. He protected them, counseled them, and offered opportunity.

He made them feel valued, and late in the book, when passing the Family business down to his son Michael he gave perhaps his most important advice in the entire story: "You cannot say 'no' to the people you love, not often," Don Vito said. And then when you do, it has to sound like a 'yes'. Or you have to make them say 'no'.

You have to take the time and trouble. That's what you're doing all of this for. Rule 9 - The Godfather kept immaculate professional habits.

I despise lateness. I'm physically incapable of it. Being late shows disrespect to your friends, family, and business partners. It's not hard to be punctual. If The Godfather can show up on time, then you can too.

There is tragic irony in this. Sonny is devotedly loyal to his father. But his passion always gets the better of him. Vito Corleone runs his family, and empire, through an unflinching loyalty and devotion to him.

It is the ultimate form of filial piety. The piety of the sons is measured through their dedication to their father.

Religion also surrounds the landscape of The Godfather, adding the pious element to devotion to the filial head. The association of the Corleone family with a sort of neo-pagan Romanism—where the household father is the household god that structures all life—cannot be missed by the educated viewer. The family is immersed in Old World culture through the aesthetics that surround them and the bodily actions of each Corleone family member.

Intimate participation rules the family. He is the absent son and brother. He was the only one to serve in the Second World War, keeping him away from the family business in his formative years. He is the only Corleone son not present at the start of the wedding and the only one not related, in some way, to the work of his family.

The tragedy of Michael, and The Godfather is a tragedy with Michael as its lead protagonist, is that he is torn between the duties and obligations to his family and his want to be legitimatized which amounts to his shedding of his heritage, identity, and fidelity to family. In talking to Kay Adams, Michael reflects that the ways of his father are not his ways. In the novel, in the famous dinner scene before visiting the hospital where his father is recovering, Michael instructs Kay to tell her parents about their plan to marry and how he was a distinguished graduate at Dartmouth, received the Distinguished Service Cross and Purple Heart in the war, is hard working, and, most of all, honest.

On one hand Michael desires to become assimilated into American society. On the other Michael desires to avenge his father which would amount to his totalizing embrace of his family and heritage. This dynamic within Michael is reflected through the two women of his life and what they each represent.

Apollonia is Sicilian.

She is submissive. She is his soul mate.

Kay is American. She is headstrong. Moreover, she is the embodiment of America in the mid- twentieth century. Furthermore, Kay is egalitarian. He cannot escape his blood. A further sequel by Winegardner, The Godfather's Revenge , was released in These novels continue the story from Puzo's novel. It covers the years to , as well as providing significant backstory for Michael Corleone's character prior to the events of the first novel.

The events of the film The Godfather Part II all take place within the timeframe of this novel, but are only mentioned in the background. The novel contains an appendix that attempts to correlate the events of the novels with the events of the films. The Godfather's Revenge covers the years to Continuing Puzo's habit, as seen in The Godfather, of featuring characters who are close analogues of real life events and public figures as Johnny Fontane is an analogue of Frank Sinatra , Winegardner features in his two Godfather novels analogues of Joseph , John , and Robert F.

Kennedy , as well as alleged organized crime figure Carlos Marcello Carlo Tramonti. In The Godfather Returns , Winegardner also dramatizes the sweep of organized crime arrests that took place in Apalachin, New York , in Winegardner uses all of the characters from the Puzo novels and created a few of his own, most notably Nick Geraci, a Corleone soldier who plays a pivotal role in the sequel novels.
